NEW ORLEANS (October 3, 2012) –
The New Orleans VooDoo, Arena Football League, and SMG announced on Wednesday afternoon that the VooDoo will play all nine games of the 2013 season in New Orleans, with three in the New Orleans Arena and the remaining six in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Due to scheduled renovations to the New Orleans Arena starting in May of 2013, the VooDoo will be unable to play in the facility once the renovations begin. Working closely together, SMG and VooDoo ownership came to an agreement that will allow the VooDoo to play home games in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome beginning in May for the remainder of the season.
This agreement keeps the team in New Orleans as opposed to playing in other venues in Louisiana or on the Gulf Coast.
“We are very thankful and gracious that Alan Freeman and his staff at SMG have worked through this with us,” said Dan Newman, one of the VooDoo owners. “Having the VooDoo here in New Orleans is important to the community and the local economy. I can’t wait to see the VooDoo play in the Superdome just like the New Orleans Night did in the early 90’s.”
The New Orleans Night were the first arena football franchise in the city, playing the 1991 and 1992 seasons in the Superdome. When the VooDoo take to the Superdome, it will be the first time in 20 years that the building has welcomed arena football.
The VooDoo will play three home games from March to May in the New Orleans Arena, commonly known as “The Graveyard” by the team’s fans. Then the VooDoo will play six home dates from May to July in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, which is being dubbed as “The Mausoleum across the street” by the VooDoo front office.
“VooDoo owners Doug Harrington and Dan Newman have been very proactive in making sure New Orleans is not deprived of its VooDoo this season, working diligently with the AFL and SMG to come up with a resolution,” said AFL Commissioner Jerry Kurz. “I am thrilled that this agreement has been reached and I can’t wait for the return of arena football to the Superdome.”
VooDoo 2013 season tickets start as low as $100 and can be purchased by calling 504-875-3900 or toll free 888-277-5526. Come be a part of all the fun in The Graveyard and The Mausoleum across the street this season.
